Re: [RC] fractured tibia - Carol SuggsI had a more serious injury...twice. Femur came down and crushed my Tibia (basically pulverized it) and detatched the Fubulia bone as well. This was in my right leg, due to a horse that flipped over sideways on me when I was trying to dismount. (mare had her hind leg hung up in some wire) This resulted in a reconstructive surgery to my knee, synthetic bone replacement and a large bracket and screws. No cast. I was non weight baring for about 2 1/2 months. Then did a similar injury on the left leg a few years ago. Slammed my knee into the corner of an open powder river cattle gate in the arena. Broken Tibia and shattered knee. This time they used cadaver bone on me and again screws and plates...no cast. I was non weight baring for about 2 months. Take it easy, catch up on your reading! (may I suggest Julie Suhr's book if you haven't read it yet...) Keep your leg elevated, especially when you sleep. It will help with the swelling. Not sure what kind of cast you have but you might want to ice above and below your cast to help with swelling. If it gets ichy DO NOT try to scratch it with anything. When you are in a cast your skin doesn't get air to it and it gets really moist and can tear easily (IE don't use a clothes hanger to itch with beacuse you could tear your skin, end up with an infection!) Make sure you are taking your vitamins especially xtra calcium. I was riding after the second leg break at about 1 1/2 months (I was still on crutches and had to hop over to a stump to get on the horse) and I have to admit I should not have been riding. If I would have had an issue where I had to control my horse from a spook or something I may have paid for it dearly. I had no business riding that soon. Accidents happen. Doctor told me after about 3 months I could ride but not to fall off! Also, be careful on your food intake. Its easy to eat too much while you are watching tv and laying around...take it easy that first month, but once you start feeling good with the crutches, go out and brush your horse, there is still things you can do if you are confident with the crutches. I lunged my horses and brushed them several times a week while I was laid up (after the first 30 days). Good luck and stay positive! All I can think of is getting back into the saddle and into the woods. I live in northwest Montana and our riding time is limited due to the weather up here. If I'm lucky, I'll still have some of September and October and maybe even November to ride yet this year...I'm trying to stay positive, but HELP!!! Thanks for your input, Nancy... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
