Re: [RC] Night riding/motion sickness/dark horse syndrome-mighttry this. - Truman Prevatt

First 100 I did on the mare (black - no white anywhere) I got sick as a dog. Next 100 I put glow sticks on her breast collor. She was still back and all I saw was a "ball of light" appearing on my left, disappear and appear on my right. I took those thing off before I lost what little food I had in me.

I tied one of the glow sticks to the back right of my saddle (behind me). I tied the other on the other side. That way I had light in my peripheral vision but it wasn't moving around. That worked that ride. After that I had no problem at night - didn't need to do anything. I would just carry a couple small flashlights and use them if I needed to find trail markers. After awhile my eyes got so used to the dark I could see although it seemed to be pitch black.

So there is hope - the first time at night on a black horse is the worst.

A friend of mine, who is trying her first 100, and I went out for
a ride in the dark the other night. She has ridden in the dark once.
I rode for over 10 years without any problem, in the dark, BUT I
was on a white horse. The first 100 I did this spring on Tempo, I
discovered the motion sickness-headless horse syndrome, and did NOT
like it! I am hoping to do another 100 this month, so my friend and
I both figured we better get to experimenting with night riding.
She suggested putting the glowstick necklaces on the horses necks.
Not only were we both comfortable trotting, neither of us got dizzy!
Still not the same as a white horse, but I feel now I have a good
chance of actually getting to trot in at the finish this time! :o)
If you suffer the dark horse, and motion sickness, you might "try"
the necklace, just in case it helps you like it did us.

Skyla and Tempo (who was quite cute in his glowing pink necklace)
