[RC] 100-1 Steph - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: ti Tivers@xxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== How did you arrive at the weekly mileage recommended? From 4 miles/day (24 miles/week) to ultimately 17 miles/day (100 miles/week)? Steph> In Abu Dhabi, looking at the training protocols of 120 horse vs performances and costs of performances in terms of things like lost weight and lack of recovery, blood indicators of overstress, subsequent performance, lameness issues, etc. HR response to exercise, post-ex CK, and body weight were the indicators that were most useful in coming to that conclusion. Bloods, working HR, and body weight were taken every day there. Unlimited funding. Regardless of the intensity of the work, the miles themselves seem to be tissue-protective and speed recovery. More is almost always better, but the minimum preparation for a race seems to be matching weekly miles to the racing distance. The idea came from a French trainer, but the concept did prove out in practice in Abu Dhabi. We were typically racing 75s and up though. Many pretty unfit horses can get away with a slow 50 once in a while. But in fast company, these seem to be the minimum numbers. Without the base miles, a single race there can be very punishing. ti =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
