RE: [RC] loose salt - Jim Holland

Not sure why you would feed LOOSE salt in the pasture....that's kind of a
exercise in frustration, since it gets wet, hard, spilled on the ground, and
mixed with just about everything.

I provided loose salt for quite a while in the stalls, but they never
touched it. They have a large block of both white and mineral available and
they prefer that. I have multiple pastures (5) and move my guys once a
week. I wanted them to have salt in the pasture, but those large blocks and
the salt feeder are heavy and that was a LOT of trouble.

I tried feeding the little small salt blocks, but I never could find a
decent holder....those little wire ones are crap. They horses yanked the
blocks out of the holders, bent the holders, the salt fell out, they toted
them all over the pasture, I hit them with the mower...just a real pain.
Then I discovered these. Go to Jeffers at:

http://www.jeffersequine.com/ssc/

In the search at top left, key in SP-L1 (This is the item number) Can't give
you a direct link...doesn't work.

I mount one of these on a post about knee high near each water trough. It
has a little "post" in the middle. I take one of the small salt blocks,
drill a one inch hole in the middle with a spade bit and drop it in the
feeder over the post. When I move the horses, I just move the block to the
feeder in the next pasture. Clean, easy, and difficult to get it out when
they chew on it. Any pieces or loose salt just stays in the feeder and they
can lick or eat that as well.

If you want a pic of what it looks like in the pasture, drop me a note
privately.

Subject: [RC] lose salt

What do people use to feed lose salt in the pasture? My girls keep turning
over the pan and dumping it on the ground. I dissapears during the day,
but I think that they are eating some dirt with it and I do not know how
much they are really getting.

Thanks
Adam
