Re: [RC] [RC] To Finish is to Win - Sisu West Ranch

This thread asks a question that can best be answered by a careful statistical study. (Mr. Ivers, please read further before posting about endless academic studies.) For the purposes of this thread, I have chosen to define "trouble" to be an all inclusive label for any horse that does not finish a ride with a springy trot, ears up, great CRI, obviously "fit to continue" and looking for food. We all know that some newbies get into trouble, some old hands get into trouble, some fast and some slow riders etc. also get into trouble. The question implicit in this thread is "What group is most likely to get into trouble?"

Because it appears that there is a broad distribution in the data, large numbers of events need to be analyzed to get a significant result. The current debate does not even have the possibility of identifying which group is more likely to get into trouble.

It is my feeling that if such a study were done, we would find that some of the groups had a significant, but not very greatly different chance of getting into trouble than others. The problem would be, that armed with this knowledge we still could not prevent problems, because so many of the problems happen in all the groups.

Identifying which particular horse, on a particular day is starting to get into "trouble" is the responsibility of the rider, the control vet and the rider's crew (if any). We will achieve gains in this area by educating riders and control vets, not by placing inflammatorily worded labels on groups of endurance riders
