Re: [RC] How do you pick the horse? - Diane TrefethenOne other point that hasn't been mentioned can be the kiss of death if you want to do endurance... an old dam at foaling. The older a mare gets, the more difficult it is for her to provide the proper in utero environment. Consequently offspring from an older mare is more likely to come up short from the getgo. You can condition, you can supplement, you can wait till they are 5 or 6, but if the foal was not properly nourished and rotated in utero you are wasting your time. I had a foal from a 25 yr-old mare. The filly was correct, sound, smart, great endurance bloodlines, grew up to be sensible with a super dispostion... and she couldn't even do 25 miles. How old is too old? I don't know but 25 is for sure.=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
