Re: [RC] How do you pick the horse? - Carol SuggsIts a crap shoot...but seems that odds may be better in selecting 3 year olds over yearlings. I like a nice body, straight legs and willing attitude and the later you don't see sometimes until you start working with them. I am over my looking for the chrome phase... But to contradict what I just said....I selected two babies out of a pasture full of babies and mommies in Nevada. Both with similar bloodlines, one was a standofish filly but with a knock out body. The other a colt with a big head and crooked legs that picked me out in the field and wouldn't leave me alone... Guess which one has turned out to be the best all around horse with an awesome personality? Thats right, the colt. He is big and beautiful now 4 years later, a little crooked in the legs but an awesome guy with a great personality...his 1/2 sister, well she ended up being a short stocky little thing with a lot of heart, nice manners, high performance all the way but a little broncy. Those that know me, know I don't have any arabs on my place. Not by choice, I love the breed and had them when I was younger. But am married to a cowboy and we need working horses first then horses for play later. (not that arabs are not working horses...I am not saying that, I know plenty that are so don't kill me here) But for where we are right now in our life and what we do my barn is full. I am sure that within the future my barn will also have an arabian in it at some time. Still I think its all a crap shoot in whatever breed you are pursuing. You can research the hell out of a breed get the perfect body and still wind up with a dink... ya just never know. Like I said, its a bit of a crap shoot. Let's suppose there are a number of 3 year old horses with similar back grounds and breeding available. How would you select the one or two to put two years of feed, training, and conditioning into with the idea of having a good 50 mile horse at 5 years old. None are yet under saddle. What conformation qualities would you insist on? What else would be important to you? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
