That's a function of some newsreaders.  Are you using Outlook?  I think that's
one of the ones that doesn't put in any carriage returns, and expects the
reader's program to break the lines.  There may be a setting in your program to
change that behavior, I don't know (I use Agent myself), but you could look for
it in your options.

When I reply to one of those "runaway line" messages, I usually break up the
lines myself in the reply, like below:
