[RC] Fwd: food choices during holds - Thanks - Priscilla Worth

Angie, Karla & Karen - Thanks for the advice - it's really great have such resources to tap. ....I think I'm going to love RC - it's not only educational, but it's certainly been entertaining the last few days!

Looking for suggestions... Khasino and I have done 1 LD ride and will be doing a 50 in October. During the vet hold, K would not eat his usual hay & wet beet pulp (with plenty of apple & carrot chunks mixed in). However, he was constantly sneaking over to munch on a pile of Dengie. He vetted fine at the hold and at the end.

Should I include small rations of Dengie in his regular diet and then allow him free access during rides? I have just moved to VA (from Maine) and when K arrives her next month, his new diet will consist of free choice round bale hay 6:30 am to noon, then turn-out on good pasture until 6pm, then a flake of timothy for dinner. I planned to use Strategy to replace the grain mix he was on up north. He gets the beet pulp/carrots/apples after every ride.

Thanks for any input.
