Re: [RC] ctr rules - Chris Paus

Well, don't knock it if you haven't tried it!

MOTDRA has been in existence since 1990. No it's not as old or as big as NATRC, but it doesn't make it any less viable an organization. We are recognized by AHA for the distance riding programs and by AQHA and other breed associations.

Even in the 15 mile distance, which we all know is a "baby" distance, riders must take good care of their horses as they are scored on the same criteria as everyone else. those who don't pay attention or who ride poorly or who have a poorly behaved horse, will be at the bottom of the rankings at the awards.

yes, we do camp out, even for 15 mile rides which are held in conjunction with the 30 milers. Everyone is at the same camp. riding starts at the crack of dawn like endurance, so unless you want to get up at 0 dark 30 and drive in for a vet check in the near dark, you'd better be there the night before.

Horses or riders with poor manners can lose points on that. We don't have "clinics" at the rides, but do have an annual clinic in the spring to teach new prospective riders how the sports of endurance and MOTDRA CTRs operate.

I also give lessons privately and do clinics for groups of people, riding clubs, 4H, etc. Just about any MOTDRA member will mentor a newbie. I sure got a lot of help when I first arrived and was clueless.

We almost always have a booth at EquiFest in Wichita each spring and have conducted clinics at EquiFest. We have a web site: http://motdra.fws1.com

oh btw, the acronym stands for Middle of the Trail Distance Riders Assoc, because the founding members selected a sort of "middle of the road" approach to setting CTR rules... they wanted enough rules to make the playing field as level as possible, but not so many rules it became onerous.

Our rules are online on the website...

Between MOTDRA and AERC, I have rides available just about every month of the year and even two a month sometimes. I haven't done NATRC because I simply don't have time for any more organizations and rides, not because I have anything against NATRC.

well i'm in oklahoma and really love natrc, love riding 2 days at least 25 miles or so each day is a really good way to spend my weekends, natrc also has an option of a 3 day ride and i hope they'll do more when i retire would love to go that long... more and more trail areas are gaining mileage so you have 60+ miles of fresh trail to see. each to his own i guess, if you want to go ride a saturday 15 miles and not have the 'horsemanship' clinic part to your ride i guess you have lots of options. to me there's a concern that riders would not be learning how to ride to benefit the horse or perhaps not taking care of the horse well in camp. but i guess if it's one day you don't need to camp? funny i've known and rode natrc since 1983 and this is the first i've heard of modtra. I also ride the AHA regional rides and plan on maybe riding at the national at Kanopolis next year, if i can get some endurance rides done by then to speed the horse and me up enough.
