RE: [RC] Adequin vs Legend - Steph TeeterHi Andrea - from what I understand - both Adequan (glucosaminoglycans) and Legend (hyaluronic acid) have anti-inflammatory properties, Legend being a stronger anti-inflammatory than Adequan. Adequan also acts to promote healing/regeneration/health of cartilage (joint cartilage, connective tissue, etc). Legend has been described to me as a 'lubricant' - it is the natural substance found in the synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints. I took a horse into our vet clinic last week with sore feet - mildly positive to flexion of both lower limbs. He was diagnosed with 'synovitis' - inflamation of the joints - the synovia - in both front feet. The vet (whom I have a lot of respect for) recommended a series of Adequan - once a week for a month (I would have thought he'd recommend Legend). Basically he's a real fan of Adequan for treating joint disorders. He also recommended it as a 'maintenance' drug for all hard working horses, saying the dosage for maximum maintenance is every 2 weeks. Most people I know that use it for maintenance give it once a month - but he said the lifespan of a dose of adequan is 30 days - with the effect (receptor saturation) gradually decreasing - so if you want to make sure that your horse has at least 50% saturation at all times, then go twice a month. Btw - we also took xrays of the horse, and a lateral picture of his pasterns and feet was a bit alarming... he has sort of boxy feet, a lot of heel, and his p3 joint (coffin bone) was at a different - steeper- angle from the p1 and p2 (pasterns) - Very cool to actually see the problem and know how to correct it. I have the xrays as jpgs if anybody is interested in seeing them. You can also see the effect of the angles on his hoof growth - a concave dishing of the front plane - slight bulging at the coronary band, and again at the toe. The vet pointed to the angles, and the slight bulging of his foot at the junction of p2 and p3 and said this is the problem, causing the synovitis. We're going to whack off a lot of heel on this horse. I also took another horse in for xrays - this horse has low heels, long sloping pasterns. His xrays were as expected - a gradual sloping angle of p1, p2 and p3, not a nice straight line. I'm going to start shoing him with a 1 or 2 degree wedge pad. I have his xrays as jpgs too. This is very important stuff in our sport - I really recommend getting good xrays of the feet if there is any sort of odd hoof growth, underun heels, boxy/clubby feet, etc. That way there is no head scratching - you know exactly how to trim the foot. Do any of you use Adequin or Legend and if so which one do you recommend. I believe in prevention, so would like to start my horse on one of these before he shows any problems.
