[RC] re:scratches - Maryanne Stroud

Thanks, Truman.

"There are several ways this can happen. The skin gets dried out and cracked
from sun exposure and the microb gets in. In the Western US, the soils in
places is very alkaline and that will cause the skin to develop cracks and the
microb to get in. The other thing about alkaline enviroements is micro
organisms such as this one thrive in these environments. They don't do well in
acidic environments. The soils in the Easter and Central part of the US are on
the acid side because they contain a lot of decayed and decaying material.
Hence scratches is much more a problem in the Westen US than it is the Eastern
US."

I'm willing to bet that our soil in Egypt is highly acid since it is all
decaying and decayed material. The only thing faster than plant growth in Egypt
is plant rot. That would explain why we don't see much of it. We also have
very hard water here and when I need to have something really clean we add a
bit of vinegar to the rinse, which would also keep things down.

Much appreciated.

Maryanne
