Re: [RC] 100 milers and limited distance - rides2farI've run numerous marathons, countless 10ks', and, as I've aged, more and more 5k's. Different distances for different stages. It doesn't hurt marathoners to have lots of races that are much shorter distances. Usually one uses the shorter races to train for the longer distances. So, why the fuss about shorter events for endurance riders? What if you headed to a race and never knew how far you were going to race. You just ran until you saw a finish line. You did several that turned out to be 5K and then somebody threw in a marathon. Would that marathon not make your more tired if you kept hoping maybe the finish line was around the bend for the majority of the run? Would you be as apt to accept the water they offered you if you'd been running 5 k's and it had never been much of an issue there? That's how I'd picture it. Honestly, my main issue to work out was simply tack. Getting everything where it didn't rub, optimum stirrup length (that was a biggy) tights that were right for me, a girth placement right for the horse, etc. Once that was out of the way the rest was mental.
