[RC] LD's bad for horses..... - mkrumlawI think the overwhelming consideration here is that EVERY HORSE IS DIFFERENT! I've just started a horse that thought he was going to die (mentally) at the 13 mile mark. We were doing his first official LD ride. He had enough conditioning to fly through the ride. In his mind he was toast. Needless to say, he's already figured out that he needs to take care of himself. Next year I'll be starting a 5 year old that I just watch in the pasture and think needs to be started on a 100...way too much horse for a 25 and possibly even a 50. Each horse is different, each rider is different, and folks have to do what is best for the team. My observation is that you need to take them far enough on their first rides that they get a little tired towards the end. A little tired can be good thing. It shows them they CAN get tired. I've always held to the firm belief that it isn't the distance that "kills" it's the speed.
