Re: [RC] IV's in race horses? - Jon . LindermanI can only tell you my observations as a standardbred owner/trainer. I've never given, nor have I ever seen anyone giving IV's before a race in the ship in or detention barns prior to a race & we are there sometimes a 1/2 day before a race. So many horses are on lasix, on any given race day (maybe 75% or more) that they are dumping water copiously before a race. An IV would reverse the effect of lasix if I am not mistaken. Maybe some do give IV's, but I haven't ever seen it. Jon
"My next door neighbor, a Standardbred trainer, gives every one of his horses IV fluids before every race. Libby" This sounds strange to me Libby. How soon before the race does he give it? I know if you give a race horse just a couple of swallows of water an hour or two before a race it has a great impact on their speed. Wouldn't giving them fluids via IV have the same effect or is it the water in their stomach that slows them down? This is just what I have heard old race trainers say, to never let a horse drink 2-4 hours prior to a race. I have no personal experience with it however.
