Several years ago at Santiam
Cascade 100 mile ride, some campers with TW horses saw people marking the trail
and became curios about endurance riding, so two of the signed up, one for the
75 and one for the 100. Never been to ride before!! They both completed. The
100 miler was an inspiration to all he met on the trail. At one point he felt
his saddle was too much for his horse, so he took it off and rode a section
bareback.
Several of us waited at the
finish line to cheer him in (very late into the
night) He finished in great
shape. I later learned this man lives on the Oregon coast and rides his horses in the
sand and rides often, so he had a conditioned horse, I think his name was
Dennis.
Some of my best memories
were on the 100's. After my first 100 at Brothers, Oregon, I had doubts I would make it (the
horse was fine). The thing I noticed after the ride was then the 50 mile rides
became much shorter and were much each on me.
