RE: [RC] 100 Mile One Day Rides - Jim Holland

Hmmmmm...T, I don't agree. I would like to see MORE rides, especially if
that rides doesn't get enough participation in a 100 or offer only a 50,
offer an "alternative" distance, such as a 75 or 80, perhaps including an
elevator option. I see lots of advantages to a 75.

As a "100 wannabe", I can vouch for that fact that there is a HUGE jump from
a 50 to a 100. Transitioning from 25's to 50's adds 25 miles. Transitioning
from 50's to 100's adds 50 miles. As many riders have pointed out, there
seems to be a "wall" out there at about 80 miles or so.

Typically, you do a few 25's until your horse is comfortable and gains
experience, then move up to 50's until your horse is well seasoned, then try
a 100. I think this large increment intimidates some riders, and if there
were more opportunities for 75's, it would provide an easier transition to
the 100 mile distance.

Since many 50's are finished by early afternoon, it would not be as
difficult for a Ride Manager to offer a 75 as it is a 100. I've done two
75's, one on Sunny and one on Magic and would have done more, given the
opportunity. On both I finished an hour or so after dark, giving me and my
horse the chance to "go a little more", gain some night riding experience
but reducing the stress associated with being out all night. JMHO.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a 75, I'd do the 100. If I didn't
want to do the 100, I'd do the 50. There is little advantage that I see
in a 75.

Given the two mileages on our event, there are consistently twice as
many 75 mile riders as 100 mile riders. (They like finishing before
dark.)
