RE: [RC] thank you, Angie - Laurie UnderwoodCindy writes: "You are appreciated even if we're out voted by people "who have no interest in ever riding a 100 mile ride." Cindy AERC#176 I think we may have lost the focus of Stagg's intent, which, if I understood it correctly, was to ask the membership how we can increase the number of 100 mile participants at rides. I can only speak for myself here. I'm a relative newbie to this sport, I did my first ride in 2000. I started in 25s, tried to move up to 50s, had virtually no success at 50s -- 1 completion out of 5 starts. I have one horse, and it's not likely that I'll have another anytime soon, so I definitely have no interest in DOING a 100. But .... that doesn't mean that I don't support the folks that DO 100s. And I have no interest in seeing 100 mile rides disappear, even if I can never do one myself. My way of supporting the 100 milers is to volunteer at rides that offer 100s, like Liberty Run. To attend rides that have 100s, like Hallelujah, and be there when the 100s come in off the trail and offer crewing help. To shout encouragement to the 100s as they come in and off trail. We've all seen Maggie Meiske's posts about her struggles to attract 100s at the Wolverine Ride. If she offered only a 100, I suspect she would have no ride. I don't know what it will take to attract more 100 mile participants to rides ... but I think we as a group should try to focus on that.
