Re: [RC] Another probiotics question - rides2far@xxxxxxxxCan you give a horse too much probiotics. We have talked about electrolytes and how you can overdose with them. I said I guess so, but I would ask to see if anyone has any input. The first time I tried Probiotics was at the Biltmore 100 when Kaboot's gut was slow. Joe Edwards gave me some to try. I did, gut sounds were great. I thought, WOW! I should give those all the time. Next ride: Liberty 100. Every time I gave electrolytes I gave probiotics. At the 80 mile mark he was doing GREAT, vetted through so energetically that the 50's who were having their awards applauded his trot out. Went back to the trailer and he lay down, then kept looking at his belly. :-((( Got the vet over and he said it sounded like a gassy colic. Didn't think he needed any treatment, just walk a little. He was fine in an hour or two but it cost me a 100 finish. This was a horse who had NEVER coliced before and hasn't since. A couple of hours later he was trotting up and down his picket line every time a horse rode out on the 100. Someone told me after that that too much probiotics could make a horse gassy. Sure wish I'd heard that before that day. That would have been my 3rd 100 that year so it cost me the big nice monogrammed SERA 100 Milie Club winter blanket. Can you still I *still* think back on the decision to give so many probiotics and kick myself?
