RE: [RC] [RC] Being the Herd Leader - Nancy Mitts

While I think a lot of the "differences in this discussion are due to symantics. I really have to agree with kat's statment:
<  You are not a horse, and your horse doesn't think you are a horse, and it never will. :)

Well, they might if that is encouraged, and I that's not a very good idea.
We always have several stallions around our place, and I darn sure don't want them seeing me as part of the herd.  That would encourage a constant battle between us for supremacy.  A stallion is "wired" to try to get to the top. Also, a herd has only one leader. I want them to see me as a partner they can trust, not a threat to their leadership they must vanquish.
(Actually in a complete herd there is the lead mare and a stallion, who have very well defined roles.  While the lead mare may rule the day to day herd activities, she must submit to the lead of the stallion when he says so, without question.) On the human side, there is Monte, and myself, and whoever we may conscript to feed while we are gone. Not to mention friends,  relatives,  prospective buyers, and the new neighbors little kids. A horse should NEVER be allowed to challenge a human, or require they find a place in the pecking order. While the "I am the herd leader" approach might work for the initial horse/human interaction, a horse needs to know that humans are different and must not be treated like another horse.
