I thought of something along the lines Heidi mentioned.... palatability.. but specifically, could it be chlorine they object to? Water that has been exposed to air for 8 hours (I think) allows the chlorine to evaporate (or whatever it is that it does when it goes away *grin*)

So, the water in your trough wouldn't taste or smell of chlorine, and the water you spend all that time fussing over would, especially warm water.

Horses! I try really really hard not to pamper mine! *grin*
