RE: [RC] Pure calcium or...? - heidiQuick question about using straight calcium [for muscle cramps, etc]. We use a human calcium supplement [ground if coffee grinder to powder] as part of the e-lyte mix and in the event a dose of straight calcium is needed. Is it OK to use this, or should I get something like the Farnam Dicalcium Phosphate? Hopefully Susan will weigh in on the usefulness of different calcium combinations, but just wanted to comment that calcium being an electrolyte, it is virtually always found in combination with some sort of an anion, such as the dicalcium phosphate you mention. Ain't no such thing as "pure" calcium. If memory serves, calcium carbonate is the one that is used as an antacid--and is not readily absorbed at all. (Don't believe the Tums ads!) Calcium citrate and calcium lactate are two of the more common human supplements. Good chance that the one you are grinding up is the former. Being a minimalist, I prefer feeding some alfalfa at times of peak need over supplementing, but that's just me...
