RE: [RC] Selenium - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.What condition would warrant the injections vs waiting for blood levels to build up with oral supplementation? Kristen Evidence of ongoing muscle pathology where I want to see some improvement in a hurry. Or, sometimes, in cases where selenium deficiency is suspected and/or demonstrated via bloodwork, and the owner has an important competition coming up where damage could occur if the deficiency is not addressed. Two examples, I saw a nice Andulusian stallion this morning that I suspect has some selenium-related issues. He's going to the Nationals this fall, so I have some time to see what oral supplements will do for him. If the levels don't come up quickly enough, then I'll inject him IM well before the show. Example two, an endurance horse going to Tevis next week with demonstrated low levels and related muscle issues. No time to confidently supplement orally, so he got one injection two weeks ago and was greatly improved within a week. Every case is different.
