RE: [SPAM] [RC] Selenium - heidiI have reason to believe my endurance horse has a Selenium deficiency (he is getting 4-5 mg total daily) and I am having blood drawn for a serum analysis this weekend. It sounds like it will be a few weeks before I get the results back, however. In the mean time I'd like to start supplementing with Se, my understanding is that up to 8mg daily is in the "safe" range. Just to make a slight correction--the daily REQUIREMENT is 8 to 10 mg per day. The range for chronic toxicity is 60-90 mg per day over a period of time. So clearly it is "safe" to supplement with 8 to 10 mg providing you don't have close to toxic levels in your feed. If you know the source of your forage, you can usually get at least some idea as to what sorts of levels to expect from it--ie deficient, marginal, adequate, etc.--by consulting ag extension agents in the area where it is grown. So unless you have potentially toxic levels in your hay, it is perfectly fine to up the level of supplementation until you find out what the test results are.
