[RC] [RC] Stall rest and things to do with your horse - Lucy Chaplin TrumbullSince Jack has several more months of stall rest, I am looking for something to do in his stall with him. Any suggestions? I have thought of teaching him to bow. I am racking what little brains I have left, Help! Mary You should get hold of the book on clicker training - the lady who wrote the book had a horse on stall rest and had to doctor the horse's feet daily, so she worked on clicker training. She was getting tired holding the horse's feet up, so she taught him to hold them up for her. Clicker training is fun for you and fun for the horse - particularly a stall-bound bored one. My horse is on her second suspensory pull in two years <grrr> so we're back on the rehab plan. First time around, we worked on "moving off my hand" (this really paid off and translated well into "moving off my leg" when I was able to ride her again). And one of the most useful things I ever taught my horses was to sidle up to [insert mounting block of choice - fence/fender/rock/tree stump/bucket]. To get them to line up perfectly, close to you, with the saddle in front of you saves tons of time and energy at rides. So maybe that's something you could play with - teach him to get into position, even though you're not actually getting on him? If you research clicker training on the web, you'll find tons of pages, with lots of good ideas of fun things to work on.
