Re: [RC] [RC] cell phones on the trail - Truman PrevattActually satellite cell seems to be a good ideal on paper but not a big draw. Problem is not that many people need it. You can cover most of what 99% of the population needs today with regular cell. It cost a lot of money to build, launch and maintain spacecraft on orbit. Motorola spun off their satellite service Iridium after it was about a billion over run and not end in sight to stop the bleeding. Globalstar - which I worked on for a period - is about bankrupt if not already down the tubes. For the cost of satellite cell for those areas where there is no other cell service services like Inmarsat (http://www.inmarsat.com) - which predates satellite cell by a three decades, is less expensive and more reliable. Satellite cell was a great ideal on paper but there just didn't have the market to support it. My first one took up the whole console between my seats. I expect satellite cell to evolve the same way. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
