My gelding was testing me one day, as I was leading him out of the pasture 
and away from his buddy.  He nipped me on the upper arm, and I did as Heidi 
Smith suggested.....I nipped him back.  I instantly reached over and nipped 
him on the side of his neck with my fingers.  My reaction was QUICK, and 
although my fingers didn't have enough  power in them to hurt, he got the 
picture.  After his second attempt and my second reaction, that was the end 
of it.  He didn't try that again.  I assumed the position of the boss mare, 
and I bit him back.  End of his testing me....
