Re: [RC] Stallions - Barbara McCraryMy gelding was testing me one day, as I was leading him out of the pasture and away from his buddy. He nipped me on the upper arm, and I did as Heidi Smith suggested.....I nipped him back. I instantly reached over and nipped him on the side of his neck with my fingers. My reaction was QUICK, and although my fingers didn't have enough power in them to hurt, he got the picture. After his second attempt and my second reaction, that was the end of it. He didn't try that again. I assumed the position of the boss mare, and I bit him back. End of his testing me....Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Krauss" <lazykfarm@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: "apleg8'n" <rackinfool@xxxxxxxxxxx> Cc: "RIDECAMP" <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, July 11, 2005 11:27 PM Subject: Re: [RC] Stallions My "was a stallion until 5 1/2" gelding bit me out of the blue the other day exactly as you warn in your reply. I absolutely still cannot believe he did that. I mean, we're best friends! You can love 'em, romanticize 'em, ride 'em, but don't forget for one second that they are aggressive. Not mean, just aggressive, ie, looking to push limits, expand territory, whatever. I forgave him the moment I remembered that he was behaving perfectly normally--for a stallion. I just have to remember that, gelded now or not, I need to manage him as a stallion. Now that I know it's ok to take a whiffle bat to him next time, I can love him again. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
