Re: [RC] [RC-Digest] stallion question - Donna CossDuring the winter I have kept four Shagya stallions together in a five acre pasture with very large run-in shed. (no mares are closer then 500 feet!--this is important!) Three were coming four years and the fourth was five yrs. old. The five year old ignored the rest, developed his own routine and the others, who had been together since they were weanlings, spent the time wrestling each other and working the stud piles! But they all get along, no one got hurt and they are very easy to work with as they seem to have respect for "space" either other horses or human handlers! They all do well with pasture breeding--I can turn a mare loose with a stallion who does not have a halter, walk up and lead the mare away immediately after the breeding and he just backs away. I know part of this is the Shagya temperament, but the rest is their social behavior and being allowed to interact with other horses. I cannot stand to see a stallion kept in a 12 X 12 box stall with closed sides and nothing to do, 24/7 but pace, weave or anything they can think of to relieve the monotony! Surely one can build a large paddock with good board fence with electric and a nice lean-to, within sight of all the activity on the farm, and you will find your stallion much easier to handle and I'm certain much happier!
