Re: [RC] Stallion Question - Chris Paus

My stallion is by himself with a goat for a friend. he can see the other horses and talk to them, just not be with them. In the fall, when it's time to wean babies, the colts go in with him. He takes very good care of them and he likes the company. but I've noticed that he gets agressive with them in the spring when the mares start coming in heat, so I remove them.

He's been kept in a traditional stallion way, by himself, and he's now 22. I'd like to let him have more social activity with other horses, but it's not likely to happen now. He's a very gentle horse with people, but quite territorial if there are mares around.

so we keep him apart from the herd. And as Kat said, to keep from having unwanted foals. I'd had foals on the ground here every year for 10 years and want to take a break.

Most people keep their stallions by themselves (or in with geldings)
because they don't want new foals every year.

Next year your herd is going to consist of him, 4 geldings, 2 mares, and 2
foals...unless of course either your stallion and/or your two mares are
infertile.

Only people who want their mares bred, keep stallions this way.
