This behaviour sounds like a seizure. If so, it could be caused by a host of things. My husband's a psychiatrist--I read him your post--he said people, and probably horses as well, have all sorts of reflex seizures: to lights, to smells, to a particular movement, etc. He also said it's hard to tell what causes seizures and that you'll just have to watch to see if it's repeated. What you don't want is that it be a brain tumor or some sort of brain infection but these things are very rare and so unlikely to be the cause. Have you taken his temperature? He could be seizing from reaction to an infection of some sort. My little boy used to get febrile seizures from high temperatures when he had typical childhood illnesses. They went away as his body matured and learned how to handle itself better. How old is your horse? If he's fully mature I think you'd know by now if he had full-blown epilepsy.

My husband says these things often wind up being a single unexplained incident but to be careful! Luckily it sounds like whatever it was it was relatively minor.

Good luck.
Mary K.

A VERY strange thing happened to my horse yesterday and wondered if anyone has experienced or heard of this happening before.
I was applying fly spray to my boy in his stall before turning him out (he hates this and usually throws his head up and backs away from me)he did this as usual but went stiff and actually fell over on his side in his stall! He got up right away and seem dazed for a moment but within 30 seconds or so was fine. I let him outside and he began eatting, everything appeared to be normal.
Any ideas?
Julie
