RE: [RC] Hi Tie rigging - Ranelle RubinI am with Marv. I had a horse in the trailer on a bungee trailer tie back up out of the trailer still attached the second I swung the bar to get him on a lead rope. The bungee material bunched up against the "quick release snap" clogging it so it would not function. Luckily, a quick trip around to the tack area of the trailer produced the knife that set this poor guy free. He froze when he realized he was trapped and all was well. I was lucky! Lessons learned from this: 1. I do not open the bar on the slant load until I reach through the window and free him first, putting on his lead rope at that point. 2. I replaced the bungee trailer tie with a solid one so he REALLY knows he is tied! My hubby gave me a rigging for my Hi Ties to try this weekend at Pacific Crest. The only way my brutes can escape from this is to rip the entire fiber glass rod off my rig. The "snaps and line" are rated for 26,000 lbs of force. I will see how it works and let you know next week. And we are now devising a fail safe method to prevent ripping off the rods too, just in case. The mere mention of bungee is enough to cause me some serious spastic reactions. We had a warmblood mare back up with TWO 5/8ths bungees hooked to her halter. Since they were both anchored really solid I sat there and waited for her to come rocketing back into place. She had the cords stretched to three times their length when one let go and gave all the weight to the other which immediately gave up the ghost as well. The stretching of the bungees shrunk the diameter enough to pull them out of their clips while still retaining the clips to the cords on one side of the clips. One went completely through her lower lip and blew the backs off of two of her lower incisors and chipped one biting edge really good. During the two hours of Sunday barnyard surgery we had a lot of time to talk to the vet about bungee injuries and fatalities. Marv "No bungee, no more."
