Re: [RC] [RC] respiratory cough - Soli SorokinSounds like it could be the flu or rhino, both of which have fairly short immunity periods after vaccines (3 months or so, vets will correct me if I'm wrong, surely). Both of which are also viruses and will not respond to antibiotics, although they will help prevent secondary infections. Bute helps the horse feel better, which will encourage them to eat/drink and hopefully get them over the virus quicker. The walking horse barn a few miles down the road from me just had an outbreak of flu, with these same symptoms. I didn't know this until I sent my mare there for breeding and she came back with those same symptoms - she'd been vaccinated as well, but not since last fall (according to the vet records her previous owner sent with her). Within about two weeks she was fine, but my other horses (who had been vaccinated just a month and a half ago) never caught the bug, despite direct contact when she first arrived home. Also, while her symptoms of nasal discharge and mild fever subsided after two weeks (fever only lasted a few days, discharge about two weeks), activity caused her to start coughing again (only during the activity) for about another week or two afterwards. She's perfectly fine now and has no apparent lasting effects. Vet said it was most likely the flu, but we didn't run any tests as he said it was probably unnecessary at the time. She was confirmed in foal the other day, so I consider myself fortunate that she did not lose it due to the illness. Just a thought - I'm sure the vets will have more answers for you, though. ~S On 6/24/05, Erica DeVoti <ponyxprss@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: Hoping to get some insight into what might be going on w/ my 8 yr old gelding. Went to an endurance ride over Memorial Day weekend and w/in a week of returning he had a mild intermittent cough. My original thought was it was allergies/dust irritation. Over the next two weeks it progressed into a deep deep cough. The day the vet came he had a fever and mucous discharge from nostrils. Started on 2 grams of bute/daily for 3 days (and then 1gram/daily 3 days) and antibiotics 2x/daily 5 days. Bute made him immediately better and after one dose of antibiotics the mucuous discharge was clear/gone and hardly a cough. When he went to 1 gram bute/daily his cough started to come back intermittently. His last dose of antibiotic was Tuesday (today's Friday) and his last bute Wed. and his cough is back! The vet had mentioned doing a trachea wash, but I have never heard of this and it seems very invasive. They took blood to test for rhino. (My horse has been fully vaccinated). Any ideas of what this could be, any experience in treating a respiratory ailment like this, and has anyone heard of or done a trachea wash? Our other two horses have not come down w/ any symptoms and it has been over 3 weeks since the first cough. We are soaking the hay and surrounding area to keep the dust down. My email is ponyxprss @centurytel.net for those on archives. Thanks so much for your help.
