Well, you're probably not too far off. It
obviously has the same root as the word "hysterical". Webster's dictionary
has some interesting stuff to offer: "Greek, hysterikos, of, or suffering
in the uterus, hysterical .... because women seemed to be hysterical more then
men, hysteria was attributed by the ancients to disturbances of the
uterus." I have also heard that disturbances of the mind can be caused by
the phases of the moon. After all, if the moon's pull can have such
influence on the tides of the ocean, why not on the fluid balance in the human
body. And if the fluid balance in the brain is disturbed, a person's
emotional balance may be disturbed. Luna = moon, so there's the source of the
word "lunatic". Human's are 60% water, or maybe even more and
we're rather physiologically complicated, aren't we?
