RE: [RC] mare for hire/having a colt for a friend - Melissa AlexanderGreat post, Chris. (How are you feeling?) I second the need for a very specific contract. I would especially cover who pays vet bills for the MARE if things go wrong. That can get extraordinarily expensive. In addition to deciding that though, you need to determine who makes the DECISIONS about various aspects of care, including who decides what treatment to get and pay for if the mare needs vet care. <grin> I don't know that I'd sign a contract that said I was responsible for all vet bills but someone else determined what care would be given! And then there needs to be a clause about what happens if your friend doesn't want the foal for whatever reason -- loss of job, divorce, unexpected pregnancy, whatever. I would spell out all the costs, known and possible, determine who pays them within what limits, and then spell out the terms of payment and consequences for lack of payment. I wouldn't be turning over the foal to someone who owed me a lot of money!
