RE: [RC] Hematoma update/Susan G another question for you - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.

I wanted to know from Susan what is the purpose of putting hot packs on it?
Will that also help to draw things out quicker? I would think you wouldn't
want heat.

Heat increases the circulation and allows the body to cart away damaged
tissue and cellular debris... all the stuff you want to get rid of. You put
cold (not super cold, but chilly) onto a new injury for the first 24-48 to
shrink bleeding vessels and try to minimize bleeding and swelling. After
that, heat increases circulation to clean up the mess. In some cases where
the injury hasn't yet stabilized, you might continue cold, or do alternating
cycles of heat and cold... but for most muscle injuries, use heat after the
first few days.
