RE: [RC] Organic Selenium - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.2-5 milligrams per day, per horse of the organic selenium. Every horse should be getting a minimum of 3 mg of Se from somewhere-- hay, supplements, etc. More if they're working hard or in a selenium deficient area. Some horses need lots more, like 9-10 mgs per day even when you think they shouldn't be needing that much. If you're nervous about adding a lot, then have a selenium assay run. Kind of ignore what the lab's " low normal range" says, which is .08 to 5.0 or some such mg/dl. I agree with Heidi's past comments that horses do better if serum levels are .21 - .25 or above, and I think anything below that constitutes deficient. One interesting thing--- here in So Cal, the traditional understanding has been that you don't need to supplement selenium, because there's enough in the local soil. However, a bunch of hay is being brought down from Northern Calif and the PNW, and so there's little or no Se in that hay. Even horses that seemed to being training well improved when supplemented with a bit more. Hope this helps. I know that Susan gave a recommended dosage of organic selenium for working horses at the PNER convention in January. I can't remember ... I'm thinking 2-5 ... but 2-5 WHAT? MG? OZ? I know it should be obvious but maybe someone can tell me what it is and what a ding-a-ling I am, too.:) Jannelle Jannelle Wilde & Adam Falk Menagerie Farm 584 Romie Howard Rd Yoncalla OR 97499 541-849-2460 (phone & fax) 866-241-1531 Toll-free ASK ABOUT OUR DAVENPORT FOALS! www.cmc.net/~mfarm =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
