Well. if he's got good legs then I would have
to agree with the others and think that it could be his age.
At 2 they are often still trying to find their own
legs and comfort level.
What about posting the trot for comfort level for yourself and your horse and let him move
out as fast as he wants and then do a series of gentle 1/2 halts to
see if you can bring his trot down, then push him back
up. We do this at all gaits with our young horses. Soon he
should find his comfort spot (and hopefully it will be a nicer trot for
you!).
As you can see by your response posts, many beleive
that 2 years old is too young to start under saddle. But in the QH and Paint world things are
different. My personal rule of
thumb is between the ages of 2-5 they are babies and I work them
accordingly. Our horses were all started
under saddle after they turned 2. I am a
firm believer that if the horse has the mind and the physical ability to
enable them for the task at hand, then I say go for it, but take it
easy.
We have been doing trail riding, riding around
the house putting the basics on.
He's got good shoulders/pasterns, that wouldn't
indicate a rough rider, but he is big strided with a lot of
"lift".
We're still working on the saddle thing, we've
put 3 of our saddles on him, and he's coming up with the dry patch behind the
withers. He's straight backed, and slab sided, someone mentioned that a
mule saddle might fit him, dunno.
Anyway, he's been a great student, not liking
bikes very well at all, but so far...no buck, no rear. Steering going
really well.
But as for all the horses we have ever started,
this has got to be the "brain beater" of them all!
