Ha!!! this is too funny, I just sat here laughing at the descriptions of these spin and spooks because my Appy Elvis does the exact same thing. He dumped me several times in a row before I figured out what was going on. He has improved in the last year.....probably jumps to the side only 4 foot instead of the old 6 or 7!! He has definatly taught me to balance and hold on with my legs even better. Thank the Lord for small blessings.

I too have a spook/spin horse.  Had him for 9 years...he just turned 18 and has always done it.  I would never sell him because he'd surely drop alot of other people.  Besides, what a horse...he can canter along, jump 6 feet to the left then back 6 feet to the right and still not lose a stride!   I'm used to it.  Oh but believe me, he dropped me enough times in the beginning for me to recognize it before hand.  Now, I can feel it coming a split second before it happens.  If I can get out a big "HEY" then he won't do it, but most of the time I end up just riding right through it.  He sure has taught me balance and how to stay on! LOL  I joke with my friends that my legs are like a "bun on sausage"  wrapped around tight and ready to hold on!  Just kidding.  I just keep some contact on the reins and enough leg to feel it coming.  I've tried all the spook in place stuff and everything else...no luck.  But, I will tell you at a pleasure or training rides he spooks, but if it's a competitive ride, NO SPOOK!  He knows he has a job there and nothing bothers him.  Personally, I think all the spook, spins, shys, etc. are all just screwing with us humans.  I've checked heart rate during or right after a so called spook and there is no difference than with a no spook situation.  Tells me it's all an act and living up to that "Arabian sterotype"  ha ha  I guess those Arabs just don't want to disappoint us with what we think they are all about!

Maggie has never quit the old drop and spook.  Dumped me 3 times last year.  One time was legit, the others were on purpose.  This year the drop, spin, and spook were legit because of a tan dog that came barreling out of the weeds.  Freaked me out too.  I have ridden this mare for 13 years, if she is scared, she can spin, drop, and leap sideways in a heart beat.  I have developed the right handed death grip to perfection and I try to keep my eyes peeled for the unknown.  I also sit as deep as I can.  Knock on wood.  I haven't come off this year.  Jeanie
