[RC] Trotting walkers - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Cecil sfranklin@xxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I have one of the trotting walkers. I had to train him to trot. He was a lazy pacer, but I worked on getting him into a trot in the round pen to strengthen his muscles to put an end to that pacey stuff (which I don't love or hate to ride, but since it is his lazy gait I didn't want him doing it) & now I can get him to trot under saddle, too, for as long as I want. In the beginning, he could only hold the trot for a stride or 2 at a time & we gradually built on that until he can trot as long as we want now. I think trotting him makes him stronger for his smooth gait (which is smooth & fun to ride but I do not know technically what he is doing because I'm not a "walking horse person"). I had heard that if your horse is "trotty" meaning likely to favor the trot in lazy moments, then you wouldn't want to trot that horse because it might tend to forsake its smooth gait for the trot, but if your horse is "pacey" then you can safely work him in the trot without losing your smooth gait, & in fact the trot can help that horse improve his smooth gait. I have found that to be true in my one horse test. My horse trots & gaits (& walks & canters) on cue & he is fun to ride in all of them. He will still pace sometimes but very rarely & only when he is being lazy & I can quickly convince him to cut it out, get back in the game & "ride with me." =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
