Many years ago, our whole family rode Tevis.  We took an extra horse as a 
backup, but when all of them passed the pre-ride check, we had a leftover. 
A friend of ours hadn't such good luck; her mare failed to pass the check. 
We loaned her our extra horse for the ride. She rode with our daughters, all 
through the ride, I think.  Poor woman, she became nauseated at Michigan 
Bluff and hung onto the horse's neck, throwing up over his shoulder 
periodically. This would necessitate a slow-down, while our daughters went 
on ahead. As soon as the rider recovered for a time, the horse would gallop 
to catch up with our girls and their horses, as they were all "stablemates". 
Our horse earned our friend her Tevis buckle, but she was one sick puppy for 
much of the ride.
