As a nurse, I know Silvadene is great stuff. It is used very often on burns and skin sores (pressure sores). You should have great results with  it.

As for recovery, I too have seen some pretty nasty cuts heal with a great return to soundness. Give your guy a chance. Personally, I would recommend some form of activity restriction at first, especially if stitches are involved. You don't want him galloping around tearing about stitches.

Keep a hopeful heart and give him the best medical attention you can....I bet he will do the rest. Good luck!
