Re: [RC] Secrets to Hydration??? help...... - Mary Ann Spencer
The points I mentioned were in response to the
subject Secrets to Hydration. I did not think it was a
debate:
1. I can't drink FAST if the water is too
COLD. I can drink room temperature water a quart at a time but not
cold. Drinking lots quickly gets you back on the trail faster. The
ONLY time I had someone help me on a ride was when I was breast feeding my
youngest. A friend took care of the baby while I was on the the
trail and then the horse for the holds while I breast fed the baby. So I
have to drink fast.
2. SALT is important any time one is sweating
a LOT. I avoid it most of the yr. I have found potatoe chips are
easy to eat for light food as I do NOT feel hungry for the entire day and don't
eat until hours later. Nausea is early symptom of dehydration.
3. We all wait for our horse to pee but how
long does it take for us to get caught up with our
fluids?
4. I work ER and believe it or not, there is
a diagnosis for humans called: water intoxication. It occurs with
lack of salt/sodium in the diet and LOTS of water. Sometimes occurs with
people on diuretics who don't eat properly.
BEWARE of diet products with any stimulants.
Ephedra and ma huang help with energy and wt loss but they DECREASE
your ability to tolerate heat. I DID NOT KNOW THAT AND WAS USING THEM WHEN
I HAD TO QUIT RIDING due to my pulse of 140. I found that info in a
Special Forces Medical book in 2002. Have not seen it
elsewhere but then I do not spend my days researching everything as I work to
support my horse habit and being a single parent adds to the challenge.
An additional caution to those who donate
blood: Be careful as it also sets you up at a fluid loss. I no
longer donate during 'riding' season. But I only just became eligible to
donate after being deployed overseas.
Always a challenge to do this thing called ENDURANCE.

When not eating, take some sort of sports drinks.
Remember, there are
those of us that cannot handle salty stuff. And you've got the answer
here--FOOD!! An important part of hydration
is EATING.

The flip side of that is that cooler drinks help to
mitigate a hot body, too. Some people are prone to stomach
cramps. I can chug ice-cold drinks and feel much better for doing
so. Likewise, tepid water doesn't help me out near as
much.
