Re: [RC] opening ceremony, starting the ride - Peter HarperSteph, Through work I have traveled to Malaysia extensively. If you are in to adventure eating here are a couple of suggestions. Banana Leaf Restaurant: These are traditional Malaysian Islamic "Halal" or "kosher style" restaurants were you eat with your hands, no forks or knives allowed. The food is served family style and you serve yourself onto your banana leaf plate. Most dishes are spicy curries (fish, goat, lamb or chicken) served with rice. With a little practice you get the hang of stuffing the food in your face. Durian: This is a very unique Malaysian fruit delicacy. Malaysians say that Durian is the King of all fruits, the stronger the better. If you can get past the smell the taste isn't too bad. The smell is indescribable, imagine and out house on a hot summers day and you are pretty close. The hotel will not let you bring it in. It is usually served at road side stands or in the farmer's market. The Malaysians love to see Westerners reaction to it. It you can manage a taste you'll earn their respect. If you want to get back at them, suggest they try a very strong cheese like French Blue Cheese or Brie. They'll have the same reaction as you to Durian. Mangosteen: Another unique Malaysian fruit. This is the Queen of fruits. This one I highly recommend, very sweet and tasty. Watch out the red husk will stain your hands and cloths.
