RE: [RC] Witezarif - Ranelle Rubin

The one thing to remember about alfalfa fields 30+ yrs ago is that they were
not as depleted in selenium due to gravity flow irrigation and non-rotated
crop situations as those of today. Growers in the "old days" knew the value
of rotating crops on alternating years.

I feed an alfalfa grass mixture from Nevada where it is more sprinkler
watered than gravity flow watered. Also supplement with Dynamite to ensure
selenium issue is handled.

In the 70's, I rode a stallion, Cyam, who was of similar breeding; WitezII,
Witraz and Wielki Szlem (sp?) were all in his lines. We rode him in our
wilderness trail riding business, bred mares and endurance raced him all at
the same time. It was incredible the amount of feed it took to keep him
even "lean". We, too, living in Southern Utah, fed straight alfalfa hay -
no one in S. Utah even knew what grass hay was. We always tried to get the
dairy quality hay. Besides free-choice straight alfalfa, we fed this guy
FOUR 3 pound cans of omelene a day, soaked in corn oil and then INCREASED
that on ride day!! It always makes me laugh when I hear people proclaiming
that the 6 ounces of grain they fed their horse caused them to tie-up. Ah,
well, times change, customs change, only one thing remains the same - our
gallant horses keep going down the trail and doing the best they can, no
matter what we do to them.

And Julie Suhr has told me a number of times that Donna fed Witezarif on
alfalfa hay all the time.

Back then, we didn't have the scoring system that we do now, that factored
in recoveries, CRIs, etc. I suspect he would have won a lot more BCs with
the current judging system. Back then, it was all just the vet's
impression of how "up" the horse was when he moved out, and not much
more--so horses like Witezarif indeed didn't have much chance.

His joy was in movement, pure unbridled joy at going down a trail. He
never saw the importance of wasting much energy being animated for
the vets. If I were to pick one horse that defined our sport at the
highest level it would be Witezarif. He outshone anything else our
sport has seen so far. I have only seen one other horse in my
lifetime I thought moved as freely as Witezarif.

And he did it all on plain hay, a little grain, and no electrolytes...

Heidi
