Re: [RC] [RC] Rice Hulls as Bedding - Soli SorokinA long time ago (10 years or so) I lived not too far from where you are and worked in an Arabian show barn that used rice hulls. It worked very well. They certainly absorb less but they do ok. The exception was for the foaling stall - we only used straw in that. Stalls were cleaned daily and to tell the truth, I prefer the rice hulls for ease of cleaning and "fluffiness" of the bedding vs shavings. Sometimes if you have a horse that pees constantly in one area, you'll need to pack some dry manure in the area for a few minutes to absorb the pee before cleaning it out - the rice hulls do hold SOME liquid, but not enough to sop up a huge puddle as some horses make throughout the course of a day. If you don't clean your stalls daily, I'm not sure I can recommend them, since they aren't really absorbent enough to keep things clean over a longer period. The rice hulls do tend to wick the moisture towards the ground and keep a layer of "clean" overtop the moisture to some degree, which is nice, but not enough to keep it clean for a longer time frame. ~S On 5/20/05, abigail Madden <run_rosko_run@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: I'm considering using rice hulls as the bedding material in my barn.
