Re: [RC] Extended Power Trot or Canter? - heidi

I have been under the immpression that it is better for a horses legs to
trot fast than to canter, however I recently got some advice from
someone very experienced that trotting fast is really hard one a
horses legs and cantering is much better. I'd like some more input on
this please,

Unless the horse has a really crappy canter, there is a point of extension
at the trot where it becomes harder on the horse both biomechanically and
metabolically to continue to extend, vs breaking into a canter. Really
BIG trots mean really BIG concussion as well, and the effort to maintain
the trot becomes more than the effort to canter.

If you can't tell intuitively where this point is with your horse, get a
heart monitor and see at what point the HR starts to zoom up at the trot.
At that point, breaking into a canter but maintaining the same speed will
cause a drop in the HR.
