Many cattle folks in TX put a donkey out with the cows.  I am told they will keep out the coyotes, etc.

 I saw these pictures in an e mail a while back, and didn't believe it. Actually I found out some of the ranchers out west turn a jack out with their cattle. They will typically attack and kill lions and other predators (supposedly) according to what I was told anyhow. Better than a guard dog!
