Re: [RC] Starting a 100 - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

The start of a 100 is usually pretty easy...easier than the start of other
distances it seems like. Several rides start off with an unentered pace horse
until it's light enough to see the markers. Some start you off on open dirt
roads where it's hard to miss a turn, the horses are all veterans, there aren't
that many of them, nobody takes off full blast...there's probably somebody
along who's done the ride a bunch of times and the group just stays with them.

If you prefer a light, I highly recommend a 6" flourescent bar light that you
can get from Home Depot. It uses I think 4 AA batteries. Tape it to the
intersection of the breast collar and it casts a big pool of light in front of
you with no shadows from the horse's head like you get from a headlamp.

As long as we are on the topic of 100's...what type of equipment do riders
generally use at the start of a 100 miler, in respect to helping to see? I have
heard about how dark it is and how some people need to adjust to the 'motion
sickness'. Other than having your horse follow another horse and trusting
their footing and direction, how the heck do you keep from getting lost if you
are away from other riders? Flashlights, glow sticks, what works the best to
help w/ vision on the trail? I have a helmet light, but it does not give off a
lot of illumination. The rides I have done so far have started after it is
light, and people still get lost and miss trail markers. Any equipment
recommendations would be appreciated; thanks!
