Re: [RC] TV Program about Endurance riders and wildlife encounters - Laney Humphrey

Hi Ginger,
You didn't describe your intended focus for your program about endurance riders and wildlife. Neither wildlife, wilderness areas, nor the sport of endurance need sensationalizing. Most tv viewers and city folk who have few outdoor experiences. They see the wilderness as really scary. I my opinion, that's due in part to the way it has been presented by the media. One very unfortunate result of that attitude towards wilderness is that fewer and fewer people value it. That means there is ever increasing pressure to close off wilderness areas to human recreational use. As more trails get closed, sports such as endurance really suffer. We are out there enjoying the wilderness and helping promote and take care of it. But our ability to continue to do that is increasingly determined by people who sit behind computers in offices or on a sofa in front of a tv.
I hope you will think a lot about how you want to present the sport of endurance and its interface with the wilderness. Please keep in mind that some of the same folks sitting indoors have strong beliefs about how animals should be treated (both wild and domestic, i.e., horses) but have no real experience with either wild or domestic animals themselves. They are not people the sport of endurance wants to give any encouragement to!
It isn't how we view our relationship to the wilderness that matters. It is how the viewer will see it. And, unfortunately, very few of them have the same experiences of the out of doors that we do.
Thanks for your attention,
Laney

Hi there;
I'm an AERC member and a television producer of documentaries (Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies, Ultimate Guide: Horses, etc.)I'm working on a program series idea regarding sports and wildlife. We have interest in a program about endurance riders who have had encounters on the trail with wildlife. The only one I personally have had was a snake that struck at my Spanish Mustang, Flint, and I ended up on the ground. Not a great one for our purposes. But, I thought some of you might have better stories about wildlife encounters. Please email me with any ideas at your earliest convenience. Thanks so much, Ginger Kathrens www.taurusproductions.net
