[RC] Gaited Horses - Carolyn Burgess

I have had three gaited horses, all Standardbreds. My
first two gaited: the first horse, a mare, did the
rack and paced. The second, who is a CTR/endurance
horse, paces. He is sound (after 9 years of sulky
racing, and 3 years of CTR/endurance (and tough as
nails). My new mare is just off the track and will
pace, but prefers to canter (the reason she is no
longer racing). You may find that some Standardbreds
do not hold up, the major reason for this is racing.
But if you get them sound off the track, and had them
x-rayed as part of the vetting, they should have a
sound career after racing. BTW, these guys do trot,
so when you vet in, you don't have the issue of
evaluating soundness as I have seen with Tennessee
Walkers.
